Where scientific rigor finds its precise word.

Specialized translation across English, Spanish, and German, drawn from two disciplines: original research and editorial craft. For authors, academic presses, and literary houses that cannot afford the wrong nuance.

Hybrid profile — N° 01

Two disciplines. One precision.

My work moves between the archives and the editor's desk. That double life across disciplines is what allows me to translate with the exactness a paper demands and the cadence a novel asks for.

As a researcher

Trained in rigorous methodology and critical thought.

Member of Mexico's National System of Researchers (SNI 1). PhD in Modern Literature, with peer-reviewed publications in indexed journals. I know the vocabulary and argumentative logic of academic writing from inside the field, not from the outside.

As a translator

Editorial craft and literary ear.

Working translator with 20+ years of practice, books published with established imprints, and ongoing collaborations with living authors. I work in close dialogue with editors, copyeditors, and authors until the right voice is found.

Method

A text enters through the reading. It leaves through the craft.

Before translating I read the whole text the way an academic peer—or a literary editor—would read the source. I locate thesis, voice, register and critical apparatus. Only then do I begin writing the version.

I do not translate word for word: I translate intent. Every decision is defended against the source text, not against a translation memory.

How I work →
Services

Two paths. One standard.

Every text enters through one of these doors. Both share the same rigorous editorial process; the craft changes, the standard does not.

Seal of quality — N° 03

The seal of Mexico's National System of Researchers.

SNI membership means my academic work is examined and endorsed by my peers, year after year. When I translate a paper or a thesis I am not only handling language: I am working with the discipline itself—with its critical apparatus and with the editorial codes its publication requires.

Testimonials

From the people who hire me.

Michele Lavazza
I've worked with Gerardo on two projects revolving around major works by 20th-century Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein — translating On Certainty into Spanish and reviewing a Spanish translation of the Philosophical Investigations. I've found him to be a highly skilled professional. He is reliable and easy to communicate with and his work is very good quality. I would definitely choose him again for a new project.

Ilija Trojanow
Gerardo Piña is an outstanding literary translator. He has rendered the poetic ambiguities and the sophisticated wordplay of my book Nach der Flucht with great sensitivity.
Ilija Trojanow German writer & translator
Virginia Abrín
Gerardo Piña worked for more than 10 years as a translator (English ⇄ Spanish) and proofreader for Realidad, Datos y Espacio, the International Journal of Statistics and Geography published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography. His work was always reliable and accurate across the various texts and structures typical of statistics and geography.
Virginia Abrín Director · Realidad, Datos y Espacio (INEGI)
Gerardo Piña's work as a writer and translator is indispensable in these times, when the trend is towards a simplistic and complacent culture — particularly in literature. Gerardo champions profound thought, whether translating classics such as Kafka, Brecht or Wittgenstein, or writing novels such as Donde el silencio se bifurca, in which the reader must employ something that is now on the verge of extinction: intelligence.

Urs Hammer
Mr Gerardo Piña translated Raffaela Zenoni's novel Im Mosaik schlafen [Sleeping in a Mosaic] into Spanish from the original German. Our collaboration with Mr Piña was constructive and reliable throughout. As other professionals in the sector have confirmed without exception, the quality of his work is excellent. We recommend his services without reservation.

Hernán Bravo Varela
Gerardo Piña set out to translate Franz Kafka with both precision and passion, producing remarkable Spanish translations of the great Czech writer's works. Alongside César Aira and Mauro Armiño, Piña's work stands out for its uncompromising fidelity to the original text and a fluidity that has made Kafka a true contemporary for his readers in Mexico and Latin America.
